The skin is made up of layers, with the topmost layer called the EPIDERMIS.  The outermost layer of this EPIDERMIS is called the STRATUM CORNEUM.  This is mostly made of dead skin cells.

Skin exfoliation occurs through a process called Cell Turnover. New cells begin at the base of the epidermis and move through the epidermis to the stratum corneum. The older cells are sloughed off to make room for newer cells. The skin’s surface remains smooth.

 This process of epidermal cell renewal takes between 17 and 20 days….when we are younger. As we age, this process slows down and may take as long as 30 days or more to occur. When this happens, our skin texture becomes uneven. The skin looks tired and dull. The visible signs of aging are more apparent.

Here, you can see that the stratum corneum has a rough, dry, uneven surface. Reduced epidermal turnover results in tired, dull skin.
